IRGC Says It Downed US Drone, Struck Fifth Fleet in Bahrain
(MENAFN) Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced early Wednesday that it had shot down a US MQ-9 drone over southern Iran’s Bushehr province and carried out a drone operation targeting the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain, according to reports.
In a statement, the IRGC said the strike on the Bahrain-based naval force was launched in retaliation for recent US attacks on Jask, Sirik and Qeshm in southern Iran.
The group said the American strikes caused damage to a telecommunications tower in Sirik and destroyed two water storage tanks in the Bamani district of the city.
According to the statement, Iranian naval units carried out the drone attack against the US Fifth Fleet at approximately 2:30 a.m. local time.
“The clashes are ongoing,” the statement said, adding that “heavier responses” would follow if the attacks continue.
