Xi Warns Trump of “Conflicts” Over Taiwan During Beijing Talks
(MENAFN) Chinese President Xi Jinping has warned that tensions between China and the United States could escalate into clashes if the Taiwan issue is not properly managed, according to reports citing state media.
During talks with US President Donald Trump at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, Xi identified Taiwan as the most critical issue shaping bilateral relations.
As stated by reports, Xi said, “The Taiwan question is the most important issue in China-US relations. If it is handled properly, the bilateral relationship will enjoy overall stability. Otherwise, the two countries will have clashes and even conflicts, putting the entire relationship in great jeopardy.”
He further stressed Beijing’s position that Taiwan independence is incompatible with peace in the Taiwan Strait, describing the two as fundamentally incompatible, while also framing stability in the region as a shared interest.
Xi added that maintaining peace across the Taiwan Strait represents a key area of convergence between the two countries, despite deep political differences.
According to reports, the Taiwan issue was one of several major topics expected in the meeting agenda, alongside trade, tariffs, and ongoing geopolitical tensions including conflicts in the Middle East.
Trump has indicated willingness to engage Xi on US policy toward Taiwan, including defense-related matters, stating that the issue would be part of their discussions.
The backdrop to the talks includes continued US arms sales to Taiwan, which Beijing strongly opposes, while Taiwan maintains its position as a self-governed entity despite China’s claim that it is a breakaway province.
