Trump Says He Ignores Economic Impact on Americans in Iran Negotiations

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he does not take into account the economic burden on Americans when dealing with Iran in negotiations aimed at ending the war that began in February.

“Not even a little bit,” Trump said when asked how much he considers Americans’ financial situation during the talks. “The only thing that matters when I am talking about Iran: they can't have a nuclear weapon. I don't think about Americans’ financial situation. I don't think about anybody.”

He reiterated that his sole focus in discussions involving Iran is preventing nuclear weapons development.

Independent estimates cited in reports suggest that the US-Israeli war against Iran has contributed to tens of billions of dollars in additional energy costs for American consumers.

Figures compiled by the Iran War Energy Cost Tracker at Brown University’s Watson School of International and Public Affairs place the total at roughly $38.1 billion in extra energy expenses.

The data reportedly shows that the majority of added costs stem from petroleum, followed by diesel, with the average US household paying higher monthly fuel costs as a result.

Regional tensions have continued to escalate since US and Israeli strikes on Iran on Feb. 28, which triggered Iranian retaliation against Israel and US-aligned Gulf states, along with disruptions in maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.
