Germany Considers Fines as Army Recruitment Effort Faces Resistance

(MENAFN) Germany is reportedly weighing financial penalties for young men who do not complete mandatory military-related questionnaires, as part of efforts to strengthen recruitment for its armed forces, according to reports.

The measures are linked to a broader initiative to expand the Bundeswehr amid European-wide military reinforcement plans. German officials aim to significantly increase troop numbers from roughly 186,000 active personnel to more than 260,000 over the coming decade.

Under the current recruitment framework, thousands of individuals who failed to respond to government-issued online questionnaires after receiving reminders may face fines of around €250, with earlier proposals suggesting penalties could reach up to €1,000.

The questionnaire, introduced as part of a revised military service model, asks respondents about physical fitness, health status, and willingness to serve. It forms part of a system requiring 18-year-old men to register for possible service and undergo medical evaluation.

The legislation also includes provisions that could allow conscription to be reinstated through a selection process if voluntary recruitment does not meet manpower needs. This has sparked public debate, including protests from students in Berlin opposing potential steps toward compulsory service.

Germany abolished mandatory military service in 2011, but discussions about its return have resurfaced in recent years. Senior political figures have argued that security conditions in Europe require a stronger military posture, with officials citing long-term geopolitical risks as justification for expanded defense planning.

The recruitment push is part of a wider policy direction aimed at increasing Germany’s military capabilities within the European Union framework, though critics continue to question both the necessity and public support for such measures.
