European Gas Prices Drop 8 Percent on US-Iran Peace Hopes

(MENAFN) European natural gas prices tumbled sharply on Wednesday as growing optimism surrounding a prospective US-Iran agreement tempered market anxieties over potential disruptions to global liquefied natural gas flows.

Benchmark Dutch TTF futures—Europe's primary natural gas contract—shed more than 8% in value, sliding to beneath 43 euros ($50.6) per megawatt-hour, as diplomatic signals from both sides fueled a broad market relief rally.

The selloff was triggered by reports indicating that Washington and Tehran are drawing closer to a preliminary deal, one that could bring the conflict to a close and unlock the path toward comprehensive nuclear negotiations. The improving diplomatic climate significantly reduced trader fears over a prolonged chokehold on the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway central to the movement of global energy cargoes.

Adding further momentum to the retreat in prices, US President Donald Trump announced a temporary suspension of "Project Freedom"—a military operation designed to safeguard commercial shipping through the strait—citing tangible progress in ongoing negotiations.

The conflict had already left a significant mark on global energy markets. Disruptions around the waterway had knocked out roughly one-fifth of worldwide LNG supply, sending prices climbing and unsettling markets across the globe. While the bulk of Middle Eastern gas exports are destined for Asia, the supply squeeze rippled through to Europe, which relies heavily on imported gas to rebuild storage inventories ahead of the winter heating season.

That vulnerability remains far from resolved. European gas storage currently sits at approximately 34%—well beneath the five-year seasonal average—leaving traders on edge despite the brightening diplomatic horizon.

Market analysts cautioned that the reprieve may prove short-lived. The gas market remains acutely exposed to fresh turbulence should negotiations unravel or shipping activity through the region fail to return to normal levels in a timely manner.
