France's Mélenchon Launches Fourth Presidential Bid

(MENAFN) Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of the French hard-left movement La France Insoumise — known in English as France Unbowed — has formally declared his candidacy for the 2027 presidential election, marking his fourth pursuit of the Élysée Palace.

The announcement came Sunday during an appearance on a broadcaster, where Mélenchon left no room for ambiguity when questioned about his intentions.

"I am a candidate," Mélenchon said Sunday when asked whether he would enter the race, with its first round set for April 2027, a broadcaster reported.

The veteran left-wing firebrand framed his decision around what he characterized as a world teetering on multiple simultaneous crises.

"We are facing threats of general war and dramatic climate change, and we also have an emerging economic and social crisis," he said.

Mélenchon drew a direct line between soaring fuel costs and ongoing geopolitical tensions driven by the US and Israel, insisting the remedies lie not in markets but in political will.

"There is a political cause, and therefore the solution will also be political," he said.

The 73-year-old politician also set his sights on Washington, signaling he would chart a sharply different course from current French foreign policy if handed the presidency — taking a pointed swipe at what he called the erratic conduct of US President Donald Trump.

On the Middle East, Mélenchon said he would pursue tighter policy alignment with Spain and pushed for scrapping the EU-Israel partnership agreement entirely. He further argued that Israel is economically dependent on the EU and dismissed both Washington and Tel Aviv as "paper tigers."

Mélenchon previously contested the presidency in 2012, 2017, and 2022 — narrowly missing the runoff in the latter two races.

The 2027 contest is shaping up as a wide-open field following the exit of incumbent Emmanuel Macron, who has governed under the center-right Renaissance banner since 2017. Having completed two consecutive terms, Macron is constitutionally prohibited from seeking re-election.
