Trump Says Iran Hostilities Over

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump formally notified Congress on Friday that military hostilities with Iran have ceased, citing a ceasefire that has held since early April — exactly 60 days after he first reported the military action to lawmakers.

In separate letters addressed to House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senator Chuck Grassley, Trump confirmed the conflict's official end. "On April 7, 2026, I ordered a 2-week ceasefire. The ceasefire has since been extended. There has been no exchange of fire between United States Forces and Iran since April 7, 2026.

"The hostilities that began on February 28, 2026, have terminated," Trump wrote.

The timing of Friday's notification carries legal significance. Under the 1973 War Powers Act, a president must obtain congressional authorization to sustain military hostilities beyond 60 days — a threshold reached precisely on Friday.

Despite the cessation of active fighting, Trump cautioned that Iran continues to represent a "significant" danger to American forces in the region, signaling that Washington's military posture remains on alert.

"Accordingly, the Department of War continues to update its force posture in the AoR (area of responsibility) in select countries, as necessary and appropriate, to address Iranian and Iranian proxy forces' threats and to protect the United States and its allies and partners.

"These changes are more fully outlined in the classified attachment to this letter," Trump said.

The conflict was ignited on February 28 when US and Israeli forces launched coordinated strikes against Iran, triggering retaliatory attacks by Tehran on American allies across the Gulf and the closure of the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. A ceasefire brokered through Pakistani mediation was announced April 8, followed by negotiations in Islamabad on April 11–12 that ultimately failed to produce a formal agreement. Trump subsequently extended the truce unilaterally, without setting a new deadline, at Islamabad's request.
