Pentagon Announces Sudden Exit of Navy Secretary
(MENAFN) The US Department of Defense confirmed that the Secretary of the Navy has stepped down from his position with immediate effect, according to an official statement released Wednesday.
A Pentagon spokesperson expressed appreciation for his contributions, stating: "We are grateful to Secretary Phelan for his service to the Department and the United States Navy. We wish him well in his future endeavors," he said in a statement
It was also announced that the current undersecretary will assume the role on an interim basis, ensuring continuity in leadership.
The outgoing secretary had originally been nominated by President Donald Trump and later approved by the Senate through a 62-30 vote. During earlier confirmation proceedings, he had outlined priorities focused on strengthening naval capabilities, including addressing recruitment and retention challenges, as well as expanding the fleet.
According to reports citing officials, his departure followed a period of ongoing friction with senior defense leadership. The situation reportedly involved disagreements with the defense secretary, alongside tensions connected to internal dynamics within the Pentagon.
Additional details from reports suggest that these disputes were intensified by his direct engagement with the president on strategic proposals, which reportedly bypassed established chains of command. This move is said to have caused frustration among top defense officials.
Further accounts indicate that efforts were made within the department to limit his influence, including structural changes that reassigned oversight of key military programs.
His exit comes amid a broader pattern of leadership changes within the defense establishment during Trump’s second term. As noted in reports, several high-ranking military officials have recently been dismissed or replaced, reflecting significant shifts within the Pentagon’s senior ranks.
