UN Secretary-General Hails US Move to Extend Iran Ceasefire

(MENAFN) United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has welcomed the United States’ decision to extend its ceasefire with Iran, describing it as a positive step toward reducing tensions and expanding diplomatic space.

UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said in a statement that the move could help create “critical space for diplomacy and confidence-building between Iran and the United States.”

The comments followed US President Donald Trump’s announcement that Washington would extend the ceasefire to allow Tehran more time to prepare what he called a “unified proposal,” following mediation efforts involving Pakistani officials.

According to the UN, the Secretary-General is encouraging all sides to avoid any actions that could undermine the ceasefire and instead pursue negotiations aimed at a “sustainable and lasting” resolution.

The UN also expressed support for Pakistan’s role in facilitating dialogue, with hopes that ongoing diplomatic efforts could lay the groundwork for a more comprehensive agreement.

The ceasefire extension comes amid ongoing diplomatic uncertainty, including a delayed US delegation visit that was expected to continue discussions with Iranian representatives in Islamabad after earlier talks failed to produce an agreement.

The truce, initially announced earlier this month, had been scheduled to expire on Wednesday before the extension was confirmed.
