Germany Reveals Plan for Europe’s Top Army by 2039

(MENAFN) Germany has unveiled an ambitious military overhaul plan aimed at transforming its armed forces into Europe’s most powerful conventional army by 2039, as officials seek to strengthen deterrence against Russia.

Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced the strategy Wednesday in Berlin, describing it as the first comprehensive framework of its kind for the Bundeswehr. The plan is designed to assess potential threat scenarios and significantly enhance Germany’s defense readiness in the years ahead.

At a press briefing, Pistorius emphasized a major expansion in personnel across military and civilian roles.

“We are increasing the number of active-duty soldiers, reservists, and civilian employees,” Pistorius said. “Our guiding principle is the goal of having at least 460,000 combat-ready soldiers, including both active and reserve forces.”

The strategy also signals a broader German role within NATO, with a strong emphasis on strengthening air defense capabilities across Europe.

“Air defense for Germany and for NATO will be a key area for us,” the minister said. “Whether through interceptor drones, air defense systems, or even defense against hypersonic missiles, these will be a high priority in the coming years,” he added.

Push for Military Edge
According to the newly released framework, Germany’s defense buildup will unfold in three stages, ultimately targeting technological dominance by 2039.

In the near and mid-term phases, the focus will be on rapidly scaling up operational capabilities across all military domains. Over the longer horizon, the plan envisions leveraging advanced weapons systems and artificial intelligence to secure a decisive technological advantage.
