Japan, UK Strike Deal to Strengthen Protection for Nationals Overseas

(MENAFN) Japan and the United Kingdom on Monday signed a memorandum of cooperation aimed at strengthening peacetime information-sharing on their citizens abroad.

Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi and UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper signed the agreement in Tokyo, titled Mutual Assistance to Japanese and British Nationals Abroad.

According to a statement from Japan’s Foreign Ministry, the framework is designed to improve coordination ahead of crises.

"Under this Memorandum, both sides will share information in peacetime, which is expected to contribute significantly to ensuring the safety of Japanese nationals during crises, as the Memorandum provides a foundation for further facilitating smooth cooperation in times of crises," the ministry said.

Cooper’s visit to Japan ran from Sunday to Monday and included participation in the 10th Japan-UK Foreign Ministers’ Strategic Dialogue, underscoring expanding security and diplomatic cooperation between the two countries.
