UN Chief Hail U.S.-Iran Two-Week Ceasefire

(MENAFN) United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has endorsed the newly announced two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran, calling on all parties to honor its terms as a stepping stone toward durable regional peace.

Spokesman Stephane Dujarric conveyed the Secretary-General's position Tuesday, stating that Guterres "calls on all the parties to the current conflict in the Middle East to comply with their obligations under international law and to abide by the terms of the ceasefire in order to pave the way toward a lasting and comprehensive peace in the region."

The UN response followed President Donald Trump's Tuesday declaration that he had agreed "to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks" — a significant shift after weeks of escalating military confrontation between Washington and Tehran.

Beyond calling for compliance, Guterres stressed that an immediate halt to hostilities remains essential to shielding civilian populations and easing the humanitarian toll of the ongoing crisis.

The Secretary-General also acknowledged the diplomatic groundwork laid by Pakistan and other mediating nations whose efforts helped bring the ceasefire agreement to fruition, Dujarric noted.

The UN is not remaining on the sidelines. "The Secretary-General's Personal Envoy Jean Arnault is in the region to support efforts toward lasting peace," Dujarric added, signaling active UN engagement as fragile negotiations move forward.
