Democrat Introduces Articles of Impeachment Against U.S. Hegseth
(MENAFN) Arizona Democratic Representative Yassamin Ansari announced Monday her intention to file articles of impeachment against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, citing his role in the ongoing US-Israeli military campaign against Iran.
In a post published on X, the US social media platform, Ansari issued a sweeping condemnation of the administration's war posture: "Trump is escalating a devastating, illegal war, threatening massive war crimes and targeting civilian infrastructure in Iran," adding that "Pete Hegseth is complicit."
The congresswoman left no ambiguity about her next steps: "I've called for the 25th Amendment and am introducing Articles of Impeachment against Hegseth," she said.
Ansari's announcement arrives as US military conduct in Iran faces intensifying legal and political scrutiny. A preliminary internal military inquiry determined that the US was responsible for a February missile strike on an Iranian elementary school that claimed the lives of at least 175 people — the majority of them children — according to media reports.
President Donald Trump has drawn further condemnation for openly threatening to extend strikes to civilian infrastructure, including power plants and bridges. Legal experts have cautioned that such actions could expose the US to war crimes liability under international law.
The broader conflict has spiraled dramatically since the US and Israel launched a coordinated offensive against Iran on February 28. Iranian authorities report that more than 1,340 people have been killed to date, among them then-Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Tehran has responded with waves of drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, as well as Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf states hosting US military installations. Iran has also moved to restrict maritime traffic through the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz, raising alarm over potential disruptions to global energy supplies.
