Trump Urges Action to Free Strait of Hormuz Amid Iran Oil Dispute
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump urged nations that rely on Middle Eastern oil to forcibly reopen the Strait of Hormuz if Iran does not allow free passage for vessels.
Speaking to the nation for the first time on Wednesday, Trump criticized NATO allies for declining to deploy warships to the region alongside US and Israeli operations.
“To those countries that can’t get fuel, many of which refuse to get involved in the decapitation of Iran… build up some delayed courage, go to the Strait and just take it. Protect it,” he said. He added that controlling the strait would be straightforward, noting that the US had “decimated” Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and “dramatically curtailed” its drone and missile capabilities.
Trump also pledged to intensify airstrikes over the next two to three weeks, indicating that military action would continue if Iran does not comply with US demands.
Reports indicate that the US-Israeli campaign against Iran has caused a major global energy disruption, sending oil prices sharply higher and increasing fuel costs worldwide. The conflict has severely restricted traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for about one-fifth of the world’s oil supply.
