Greek Cypriot Administration Pushes Back EU Summit Due to Drone Strike

(MENAFN) An Iranian drone struck a British Royal Air Force base in Cyprus, prompting the Greek Cypriot Administration to postpone a high-level European Union ministerial meeting that had been scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, officials confirmed.

The EU gathering of European Affairs ministers was due to convene in the Cypriot capital, Nicosia, under Greek Cyprus' current rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union. Authorities have yet to announce a rescheduled date.

Greek Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides confirmed Sunday that the unmanned Iranian aircraft came down within the perimeter of the British RAF installation on the island.

The strike follows a statement by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who acknowledged that London had agreed to a US request authorizing the use of British military installations for what he described as "defensive" strikes.

The incident unfolds against a backdrop of rapidly deteriorating regional security. On Saturday, the United States and Israel launched a sweeping, coordinated offensive against Iran, killing multiple senior officials — among them Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Tehran swiftly retaliated, deploying waves of drones and missiles against Israeli targets, American assets, and several Gulf states, sharply escalating a conflict now drawing in powers across the region.
