US, Israel Target School in Southern Iran, killing over Hundred People
(MENAFN) At least 108 people have died in an explosion at a school in southern Iran, according to a local prosecutor, as stated by reports. The incident occurred amid large-scale airstrikes carried out by the US and Israel.
President Masoud Pezeshkian described the attack as a "barbaric act" and "another black page in the record of countless crimes committed by the aggressors." The US and Israel have not confirmed any strikes on the school, which is located near a base of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps, a primary target of the air operations.
According to reports, the Iranian Red Crescent said that at least 201 people across the country have been killed in the airstrikes, with 747 others injured. Red Cross and Red Crescent teams in Geneva mobilised to respond to the school incident.
Officials stated that the school, located in Minab in Hormozgan province, had been "targeted by three missile attacks." The building is approximately 600 meters (1968 feet) from the IRGC base.
Video clips verified by reports show smoke rising from the school as crowds gather nearby, with people screaming in panic. However, international news organisations face severe restrictions in Iran, limiting independent verification of the death toll.
Iranian social media users expressed outrage over the incident. One Iranian living abroad, opposing military intervention, wrote: "The first victims of this war are 40 girls in Minab, hit by a missile attack. Is this the war you cheer for?"
Due to deep mistrust of the Iranian regime, many Iranians have questioned official accounts, with some attributing responsibility directly to the government. One user commented: "Even if the regime did not directly target schools, the deaths of children in Minab remain the responsibility of the Islamic Republic."
