S. Africa Backs Russia’s Diplomatic Push in Ukraine Dialogue
(MENAFN) South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed support for Russia’s attempts to resolve the Ukraine conflict through diplomatic and political channels, emphasizing Pretoria’s consistent call for negotiated solutions.
The remarks were made during a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday, according to statements released by both governments.
“This is in line with South Africa’s long stated position during talks with both sides that all wars end through negotiations,” the South African presidency said.
During the discussion, both leaders addressed the Ukraine conflict and explored ways to strengthen trade and investment relations “within the framework of the comprehensive strategic partnership between Russia and South Africa,” according to Kremlin statements.
Ramaphosa and Putin also exchanged perspectives on broader global issues, highlighting the importance of coordination within multilateral organizations such as BRICS and the G20.
South Africa has maintained a non-aligned position on the Ukraine war despite external pressure to criticize Moscow, which it considers a “valued ally.” Ramaphosa led an African delegation to both Russia and Ukraine in June 2023, aiming to secure ceasefire commitments, and has since engaged in bilateral discussions with both Putin and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky on a peace process inclusive of all parties.
The two leaders last spoke in August, when Putin updated Ramaphosa on his in-person meeting with former US President Donald Trump in Alaska, during which attempts were made to address the Ukraine crisis. Ramaphosa had also received updates on talks in Moscow on August 6 between Putin and US special envoy Steve Witkoff.
