Al Amal Prevail As Hosts Sharjah Impress At AWST 2026


(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Tunisia's Al Amal Sports Club kicked off their participation in the Arab Women Sports Tournament basketball championship with a commanding 100–54 victory over Bahrain's Al Hala Club on Wednesday, as part of the second round of the competition.

Al Amal set the tone early, leading 24–11 after the first quarter before pulling decisively clear in the second period with a 31–5 run to take a 55–16 halftime advantage. The Tunisian side maintained control after the break, winning the third quarter 21–14, while the final period ended tied at 24–24, resulting in a difficult outing for the Bahraini team.

The second game saw Iraq's Gaz Al Shamal Club defeat Khorfakkan Women's Sports Club of the UAE 81–71. Khorfakkan made a strong start, edging the opening quarter 21–19, but Gaz Al Shamal responded in the second period, outscoring their opponents 26–17 to take a 45–38 lead into halftime. The Iraqi side extended its advantage with a 15–13 third quarter and sealed the win with a decisive 21–13 final period.

The day concluded with hosts Sharjah Women's Sports Club securing a 74–49 victory over Kuwait's Al Fatat Sports Club. Sharjah confirmed for the second consecutive day its readiness to compete for the title, imposing a fast tempo and asserting clear control across the first three quarters (19–16, 21–7, and 22–12). Al Fatat managed only a narrow edge in the fourth quarter, which they won 14–12.

Basketball action at AWST 2026 continues on Thursday with three matches scheduled at Al Batayih Cultural & Sports Club. Kuwait's Al Fatat Sports Club will face Tunisia's Al Amal Sports Club at 12:00 pm, followed by Bahrain's Al Hala Club against Khorfakkan Women's Sports Club at 2:00 pm. The day concludes at 4:00 pm with Jordan's Al Fuheis Club taking on Sharjah Women's Sports Club.

The Arab Women's Sports Tournament runs until February 12 and brings together 65 teams from 16 Arab countries to compete across nine individual and team sports.

Meanwhile, Oman led a strong Gulf presence as the team fencing competitions at the AWST 2026 came to a close, finishing top of the overall medal standings across épée, sabre, and foil.

The tournament saw the participation of seven clubs from six countries, including the UAE's Fujairah Martial Arts Club and Sharjah Women's Sports Club, Bahrain's Albusaiteen Sport Club, Saudi Alula Club, Syria's Damascus Club, Kuwait Fencing Association Academy and Oman's Salalah Club.

Oman claimed first place with the Salalah team, which won three gold, two silver, and two bronze for a total of seven medals, bolstering its strong presence in the team category.

Saudi Arabia finished second with the Alula Club team, securing three gold, two silver, and one bronze for a total of six medals. The UAE placed third, represented by Sharjah Women's Sports Club, with one silver and three bronze medals. Bahrain came fourth through Albusaiteen Sport Club with one silver and one bronze medal, while the Kuwait Fencing Association Academy finished fifth with two bronze medals.

In team épée, the Omani Salalah team claimed first place through Salma Al Dighaishi, Ghzal Al Fulaiti, Jana Al Sharji, and Israa Al Siyabi, earning one of Oman's three gold medals.

The AlUla Club team finished second, represented by Fawzya Alkhubiri, Dhay Alamiri, Danah Alqassem, and Ahad Muammar, while Sharjah Women's Sports Club placed third following the performance of Fajar Almarzooqi, Zainab Al-Hossany, Lamar Alnahla, and Sheikha Alzaabi.
