Brazil, South Africa Sign Defense Cooperation Agreement
(MENAFN) Brazil and South Africa have signed a defense cooperation agreement following an official visit by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa to Brazil, according to reports.
The deal aims to strengthen collaboration in areas such as research, development, and logistical support. It also encourages exchanges of military personnel, visits by high-level delegations, and joint participation in defense-related seminars and training programs.
As part of the agreement, the two countries will establish a Joint Defense Committee responsible for implementing the partnership. The committee will convene once a year, with meetings alternating between Brazil and South Africa.
During Ramaphosa’s visit on March 9, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva emphasized the importance of both nations building their own defense capabilities. Lula said they view defense primarily as a deterrent and warned that without proper preparation, countries risk vulnerability to invasion.
The two leaders also voiced concern about the growing conflict in the Middle East, highlighting that international dialogue remains the only viable route toward achieving a lasting resolution, according to reports.
