UK Investigates X Over Sexualized Images Generated by Grok AI

(MENAFN) The UK is investigating the US social media platform X over allegations that its Grok AI chatbot has been used to generate and share sexualized images, a move that could theoretically result in the platform being blocked in Britain.

Experts caution, however, that while a so-called “nuclear option” exists, implementing a ban would be legally complex and slow, making it unlikely in the near term.

The probe was launched by the UK’s online safety regulator under the Online Safety Act on January 12, following reports that Grok had produced undressed images of individuals and sexualized content involving adults and children—potentially amounting to image-based sexual abuse or child sexual abuse material under UK law.

Public concern surged in late December and peaked in early January, prompting the regulator to examine whether X has met its legal obligations to protect users from illegal content. Although X announced measures intended to prevent Grok from producing intimate images of individuals, the regulator stated on January 15 that while the steps were “welcome,” the formal investigation remains ongoing.
