European Nations Applaud Syrian Ceasefire Agreement
(MENAFN) The European Union and several European nations applauded a ceasefire accord on Friday between the Syrian government and the YPG terror group, operating under the name Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). The countries emphasized the need for a lasting ceasefire and full execution of the agreement to safeguard civilians and facilitate an inclusive political transition.
“We call on all parties to implement it in a spirit of good faith and compromise," stated EU spokesperson Anouar El Anouni in an official release.
The EU highlighted that "a full cessation of hostilities is needed to enable the provision of humanitarian aid, the protection of civilians and the return of internally displaced persons." The bloc added that ensuring stability in northeast Syria is crucial for a successful political transition.
It also called on all parties to guarantee the safety of camps and detention centers while preventing the resurgence of Daesh. The European Union expressed its willingness to assist in enforcing the agreement.
Switzerland echoed the EU’s stance, describing the pact as "a framework for a ceasefire and for advancing an inclusive political transition." The Swiss Foreign Ministry, in a post on US social media platform X, urged sustained efforts toward "a country for all Syrians."
Germany similarly welcomed the arrangement, with a Foreign Ministry representative commenting that "the peaceful integration of the SDF into state structures is an important step on the path toward a unified and inclusive Syria." The spokesperson added that this integration is essential for long-term stabilization and economic recovery.
