Gunmen kill eleven people at soccer field in Mexico

(MENAFN) At least 11 people were killed and 12 others injured when armed men opened fire at a soccer field in Salamanca, located in Mexico’s central Guanajuato state. The attackers arrived shortly after a soccer match ended and began shooting at those gathered.

Ten victims died on the scene, while another person later succumbed to injuries at a hospital. Among the wounded were a woman and a minor.

The mayor of Salamanca described the incident as part of a wider “crime wave” in the region and called on the national government to take action to restore security. Authorities in Guanajuato said they are investigating the attack and coordinating with federal forces to reinforce safety measures.

The mayor added that criminal groups are attempting to intimidate local authorities but insisted they will not succeed. Guanajuato has experienced the highest number of homicides in Mexico last year, with reports linking the violence to ongoing conflicts between rival criminal organizations in the area.
