(MENAFN) A private aircraft with eight people on board crashed late Sunday evening at Bangor International Airport in the northeastern U.S. state of Maine, prompting an immediate shutdown of airport operations.

Details released by aviation authorities confirmed that the aircraft, a Bombardier Challenger 600, went down during takeoff at approximately 7:45 p.m. local time. In an official statement, authorities said:

"A Bombardier Challenger 600 crashed as it was taking off from Bangor International Airport in Maine around 7:45 p.m. local time on
Sunday, Jan. 25. Eight people were on board. The FAA (Federal Aviation
Administration) and NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board) will
investigate."

Earlier, airport officials urged the public to stay away from the facility as emergency crews responded to the scene, stating: “Please avoid the airport. The runway is closed at this time,”

Airport authorities added that the crash remains under investigation and confirmed that first responders were actively working at the site. At this stage, the condition and extent of injuries among those onboard have not been disclosed.

According to reports citing air traffic control communications, the pilot had been cleared for departure from Runway 33 when all aircraft movements were abruptly halted. Controllers then indicated that a passenger jet had overturned, triggering the full closure of the airport and the dispatch of emergency vehicles.

The aircraft involved is reported to be registered to a company based in Houston. Investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing.
