Chinese media ridicules Trump’s Greenland meme campaign

(MENAFN) China’s state-controlled media has ridiculed the US administration for its unusual use of the viral ‘Nihilist penguin’ meme to promote a campaign aimed at gaining influence over Greenland.

On Saturday, the White House’s social media page on X shared a post leveraging the meme, which features a solitary Adelie penguin leaving its colony to walk toward distant icy peaks. The post included an AI-generated image depicting President Trump leading the penguin by its wing across a snow-covered landscape toward mountains where a Greenland flag is planted, while the penguin holds a US flag in its other wing. The caption read: “Embrace the penguin.”

The stunt quickly drew attention online, prompting Chinese media to respond with a pointed correction: penguins do not inhabit Greenland, which lies in the Northern Hemisphere. Only Galapagos penguins are found north of the equator.

“Even if there are penguins in Greenland, it would be like this,” the Chinese outlet wrote, attaching an AI-generated video showing Trump dressed as Uncle Sam dragging a reluctant penguin on a leash while holding a baseball bat in his other hand.

The original ‘Nihilist Penguin’ meme comes from German filmmaker Werner Herzog’s 2007 documentary about Antarctica, Encounters at the End of the World, and has gained widespread online popularity since the start of the year.
