Trump Sets New Record for Fastest U-Turn in Politics After UK Insult
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has commended British military personnel following intense criticism after his earlier comments dismissing allied contributions ignited fury among veterans and government leaders across Europe.
Trump faced widespread condemnation earlier this week when he asserted that coalition partners "stayed a little back, a little off the front lines" throughout the two-decade American-led campaign in Afghanistan. He further declared the US "never needed" any assistance.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer denounced Trump's statements as "insulting and frankly appalling" and indicated he should issue an apology.
Trump shifted his messaging on Saturday, recognizing UK military sacrifice.
"The GREAT and very BRAVE soldiers of the United Kingdom will always be with the United States of America! In Afghanistan, 457 died, many were badly injured, and they were among the greatest of all warriors," Trump posted on his Truth Social platform.
"It's a bond too strong to ever be broken. The UK Military, with tremendous Heart and Soul, is second to none (except for the USA!). We love you all, and always will!" he continued.
NATO allies participated in the Afghanistan invasion in 2001 after the US activated Article 5, the alliance's mutual defense provision, following the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
Downing Street announced on Saturday that Starmer had addressed the matter directly with Trump.
"The prime minister raised the brave and heroic British and American soldiers who fought side by side in Afghanistan, many of whom never returned home," the statement said.
Britain was not alone in taking offense at Trump's portrayal of coalition forces. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni labeled his statement "unacceptable," emphasizing that NATO's involvement demonstrated an "extraordinary act of solidarity towards the US."
