UK PM, NATO Chief Hold Phone Talks on Arctic Security
(MENAFN) Britain's leader and the Atlantic alliance's top official have reinforced their commitment to bolstering Arctic defenses following recent diplomatic turbulence over territorial interests in the region.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte conducted a Thursday phone conversation addressing allied advancements on Arctic security matters and the imperative for strengthened cooperation, according to an official statement from the UK premier's office.
During their discussion, Starmer and Rutte reviewed the NATO chief's meetings at Davos and examined the progress made by allies on Arctic security in recent days, the statement confirmed.
Both leaders reached consensus that continued collaboration among NATO Allies remained essential to escalating security partnerships across the Arctic theater.
"The UK stood ready to play its full part," Starmer reiterated.
The dialogue comes as President Donald Trump has pursued acquisition of mineral-rich Greenland, justifying his interest through national security concerns and mounting Russian and Chinese influence in the region. His pursuit sparked resistance from European nations, whom he threatened with tariff impositions.
Following a Wednesday meeting with Rutte on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Trump announced that a framework for a future deal involving Greenland and the broader Arctic region had been established. The American president simultaneously retreated from his tariff threats against European partners.
