Trump applauds courageous UK troops
(MENAFN) According to reports, U.S. President Donald Trump has praised British soldiers following backlash over comments he made earlier this week regarding allied forces in Afghanistan.
Trump had faced criticism after saying that allies “stayed a little back, a little off the front lines” during the 20-year U.S.-led occupation and claiming that the U.S. “never needed” their help. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the remarks as “insulting and frankly appalling” and suggested that Trump should issue an apology.
On Saturday, Trump shifted his tone, acknowledging the contributions of UK troops.
“The GREAT and very BRAVE soldiers of the United Kingdom will always be with the United States of America! In Afghanistan, 457 died, many were badly injured, and they were among the greatest of all warriors,” he wrote on Truth Social.
“It’s a bond too strong to ever be broken. The UK Military, with tremendous Heart and Soul, is second to none (except for the USA!). We love you all, and always will!”
Reports indicate that NATO members joined the U.S.-led intervention in Afghanistan in 2001 under Article 5, the alliance’s collective defense clause, following the 9/11 attacks.
Downing Street confirmed that Starmer spoke with Trump about the issue.
“The prime minister raised the brave and heroic British and American soldiers who fought side by side in Afghanistan, many of whom never returned home,” the statement read.
Trump’s earlier comments also drew criticism from other European leaders. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called his remarks “unacceptable” and emphasized that NATO’s involvement represented an “extraordinary act of solidarity towards the US.”
