WHO Chief Rejects U.S. Exit Justifications as "Untrue"
(MENAFN) World Health Organization leader Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus rejected on Saturday the justifications America provided for abandoning the international health body.
Writing on the social media platform X, the WHO Director-General warned the decision will render both America and the globe "less safe."
President Donald Trump executed an executive directive on January 20, 2025—his second term's opening day—to officially trigger America's departure from the UN specialized agency. The United Nations obtained official notification 48 hours thereafter.
According to UN charter provisions, the exit becomes official twelve months following notification.
While praising America's role as a charter member in numerous WHO landmark successes, Tedros stated in his X message, "Unfortunately, the reasons cited for the U.S. decision to withdraw from WHO are untrue."
The American action "makes both the U.S. and the world less safe," he declared, voicing optimism that America "will return to active participation in WHO in the future."
That same Saturday, the WHO released an official statement expressing disappointment over America's exit and dismissing claims from the Trump administration.
Washington's withdrawal creates matters that will receive consideration by the WHO Executive Board during its scheduled session commencing February 2 and by the World Health Assembly during its yearly gathering in May 2026, the statement indicated.
Addressing the ramifications, the WHO Secretariat "will act on advice and guidance of our governing bodies accordingly," a WHO press official informed media via email Wednesday.
America has not fulfilled its overdue membership obligations, the official confirmed. "As of today, the USA has not paid the invoiced amounts for its assessed contributions for the biennium 2024-2025," the official stated.
A Radio station based in the United States, disclosed that the unpaid sum is projected to reach approximately 278 million U.S. dollars.
