Japanese National Gets Freed on Bail After Detention in Iran
(MENAFN) A Japanese citizen who had been held in Iran has now been freed on bail, according to Japan’s chief cabinet secretary on Tuesday.
Minoru Kihara stated during a press briefing that the individual was released on Monday local time, though he did not reveal their identity, as reported by a news agency.
Kihara also noted that Japan’s ambassador to Iran met with the person after their release and verified that they were in good health. He added that the Japanese authorities have requested that Iran permit the individual to return to Japan.
On Monday, Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi had urged Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, during a phone conversation, to secure the release of the detained Japanese national.
According to the news agency, the person who was freed is the Tehran bureau chief for the public broadcaster NHK, who had been in Iranian custody since January, citing sources within the Japanese government.
Those sources indicated that the journalist faced allegations related to security matters and is anticipated to undergo trial proceedings.
Last month, Tokyo announced that two Japanese nationals had been detained. One of them had already returned to Japan on March 22.
