European Markets Show Mixed Results
(MENAFN) European stock exchanges closed midweek with varied outcomes, influenced by persistent geopolitical strains linked to the US-European dispute over Greenland.
The pan-European Stoxx Europe 600 index slipped slightly, down 0.02%, finishing Wednesday at 602.67.
Germany’s DAX 40 fell 0.58% to 24,560.98 points, while Italy’s FTSE MIB 30 declined 0.5% to 44,488.36.
Conversely, the UK’s FTSE 100 index edged up 0.11% to 10,138.09, and France’s CAC 40 rose 0.08% to 8,069.17. Spain’s IBEX 35 also posted a modest gain of 0.06%, closing at 17,439.5 points.
Market sentiment across Europe was unsettled by fears that Washington’s insistence on asserting control over Greenland could spark a fresh tariff conflict, intensifying risk perceptions.
US President Donald Trump, addressing the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, underscored Greenland’s importance for national security.
Trump declared that the US had requested urgent negotiations to discuss assuming control of Greenland, stressing that “he would not use force to gain control of the region.”
Following Trump’s warning that tariffs would be applied to certain European nations over the Greenland issue, the European Parliament suspended the ratification of the trade pact between the European Union and the US, which had been finalized in July 2025.
