Von der Leyen Says Europe Ready to Act Amid Global Shifts
(MENAFN) Europe faces a decisive moment as the global order continues to weaken, and although the EU favors dialogue and negotiated outcomes, it stands ready to respond with unity, urgency, and determination if circumstances demand, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen declared Wednesday.
Speaking before the European Parliament, von der Leyen cautioned that recent worldwide changes indicate the transformation of the international system is not temporary but lasting. She stressed that Europe must adapt swiftly while safeguarding international law and democratic values.
“We are at a crossroads. Europe prefers dialogue and solutions – but we are fully prepared to act, if necessary, with unity, urgency, and determination,” she said.
Von der Leyen emphasized that global affairs are increasingly shaped by raw power, urging Europe to reinforce its own instruments of influence, including a resilient economy, a competitive single market, and strong technological and innovation capabilities.
Turning to Arctic tensions, she highlighted that Greenland is not only a strategically important territory rich in resources but “above all, home to a free and sovereign people.”
“The future of Greenland is only for Greenlanders to decide,” she affirmed, reiterating Europe’s alignment with the US on Arctic security within NATO, while rejecting the use of security concerns as justification for imposing new tariffs among allies.
“If we are now plunging into a dangerous downward spiral between allies, this would only embolden our very adversaries,” von der Leyen cautioned.
