Mauritanian Military Boat Vanishes with Seven Soldiers Aboard
(MENAFN) Mauritania's armed forces reported Wednesday night that contact was severed with a military vessel transporting seven soldiers during an emergency rescue mission off the capital Nouakchott's shoreline.
Military officials disclosed that communications ceased overnight as the craft navigated toward a malfunctioning vessel situated northwest of Friendship Port in Nouakchott.
Aerial and maritime units were elevated to maximum readiness and immediately initiated search protocols, which continued as of 8:10 pm local time (2000GMT), military authorities confirmed.
Coast Guard vessel Arkin successfully retrieved the distressed boat and transported it to Nouakchott port with its entire crew safely aboard. The whereabouts of the military craft carrying the seven soldiers, however, remains undetermined, the army stated.
Mauritania's coastal waters—ranked among the planet's most abundant fishing territories—experience substantial vessel traffic from commercial shipping and fishing fleets, occasionally resulting in collisions or mechanical failures related to fishing apparatus.
