Italian PM applauds Trump’s pause on EU tariffs

(MENAFN) Italy’s prime minister welcomed a decision by the US president on Wednesday to pause the introduction of planned tariffs affecting several European countries, stressing that ongoing communication among allies remains vital, according to official remarks.

In a public statement shared on a US-based social media platform, she expressed approval of the announcement, saying: "I welcome President Trump's announcement to suspend the imposition of tariffs scheduled for February 1st on certain European countries." She noted that the move aligns with Italy’s consistent stance on transatlantic relations, adding: "As Italy has always maintained, it is essential to continue fostering dialogue between allied nations."

The tariff suspension followed an earlier announcement by the US president, who said the decision came after progress was made toward a broader future agreement involving Greenland and the wider Arctic region. This understanding was reached after talks with NATO’s secretary general during a meeting in Davos, Switzerland, as stated by reports.

Describing the outcome of those discussions, the US president wrote: "Based upon a very productive meeting that I have had with the Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte, we have formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland and, in fact, the entire Arctic Region." He then confirmed the delay of the planned measures, saying: "Based upon this understanding, I will not be imposing the Tariffs that were scheduled to go into effect on February 1st,” without elaborating further.

Previously, the US administration had announced plans to introduce 10% tariffs on imports from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland beginning in early February, with the rate set to increase to 25% by June unless an agreement was reached for what was described as “the complete and total purchase of Greenland.”

European leaders had pushed back strongly against those threats, reaffirming their support for Denmark and pledging a united response to any such economic measures.
