Syria Commences Circulation of New Currency

(MENAFN) Syria's central bank commenced official circulation of the nation's redesigned currency on Saturday, marking the culmination of months of intensive preparation.

"Today, with God's help and strength, the process of exchanging the Syrian pound officially begins after months of continuous and diligent work," Mokhles Nazer, the First Deputy Governor of the Central Bank, announced on X, the American social media platform.

"Since early morning, representatives of private banks and exchange companies have headed to Central Bank branches in the governorates to receive the new currency."

Nazer verified that the newly minted Syrian pound entered active circulation as of today.

On Monday, Syria revealed redesigned banknotes, featuring a redenomination that eliminates zeros and removes portraits in a strategic move toward strengthening national identity and rebuilding economic confidence.

Following the collapse of the Assad al-Assad regime in December 2024, Syria's new government has implemented sweeping economic and political transformations designed to enhance conditions throughout the nation.

Assad, who governed Syria for nearly 25 years, escaped to Russia immediately following his removal from power, terminating the Baath Party regime that had controlled the country since 1963. A new interim government led by President Ahmad Sharaa was established in January 2025.
