TDK Names “Digital Conscience” Word of 2025
(MENAFN) The Turkish Language Association (TDK) has chosen “digital conscience” as its word of the year for 2025, reflecting how moral responsibility has shifted in the digital age.
TDK explained that conscience, traditionally understood as the inner force compelling individuals to judge their actions and uphold moral values, has taken on a new dimension online. Many people now attempt to “ease their conscience” by liking or sharing posts about social issues rather than taking real-world responsibility. This, the association warned, reduces conscience to a mere “clickable action” and limits compassion and fairness to symbolic gestures.
The statement emphasized that digital conscience often prevents people from producing concrete solutions, instead deepening social problems. TDK argued that the term should be formally recognized in the language to describe this misleading function of conscience in today’s digital environment.
Türkiye’s Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy noted that the word was selected through public participation, with around 300,000 votes cast.
