Ukraine Prepared to Agree on NATO-Style Security Guarantees: Zelensky

(MENAFN) Volodymyr Zelensky announced Sunday that Kyiv is prepared to accept security protections modeled after NATO's mutual defense clause as part of a negotiated settlement, according to Ukrainian media.

The Ukrainian president addressed journalists, explaining that while his nation originally sought full NATO membership with "real security guarantees," certain allies hesitated. "Some partners from the United States and Europe did not support this direction," he stated.

Zelensky outlined an alternative framework involving defense commitments from Western powers. "Article 5-like guarantees from the United States and from European partners, as well as from other countries -- Canada, Japan ... would provide an opportunity to prevent another arrival of Russian troops," he explained, characterizing the proposal as "already a compromise on our part."

The Ukrainian leader declined to reveal specific terms of the proposed arrangement, indicating fuller details would emerge within 48 hours.

Zelensky touched down in Berlin Sunday afternoon for discussions with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and additional European officials.

A German publication suggested the Ukrainian president might meet with envoys representing U.S. President Donald Trump, though no additional information was provided.
