China-Japan-South Korea Set to Convene for Health Summit

(MENAFN) China, Japan, and South Korea will convene for a trilateral health conference this weekend, defying ongoing political friction between Beijing and Tokyo, media disclosed Friday.

Japan's Health Ministry confirmed that Health, Labor and Welfare Minister Kenichiro Ueno will participate in Sunday's Seoul gathering. A representative from China's health ministry is likewise anticipated to join the discussions.

Before departing for Seoul, the Japanese health minister emphasized the enduring partnership between the three nations. The trilateral health forum has convened annually since its 2007 inception, with only rare interruptions.

China canceled a scheduled trilateral culture ministers' conference in South Korea last month after diplomatic relations deteriorated on November 7, when Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi declared that a Chinese assault on Taiwan could legally qualify as a "survival-threatening situation," potentially allowing Japan to "exercise the right of collective self-defense."

Beijing condemned the statement forcefully, issued travel warnings advising Chinese citizens against visiting Japan, and simultaneously halted seafood imports from the nation.

Taiwan—which Beijing regards as its separatist territory—is positioned in close proximity to Japan's Yonaguni Island.
