US, Türkiye Edge Toward Progress on F-35 Program Reentry
(MENAFN) US Ambassador to Türkiye Tom Barrack stated on Tuesday that Washington is engaged in “ongoing discussions” with Ankara regarding its attempt to return to the F-35 fighter aircraft initiative, voicing optimism for a potential “breakthrough” in the approaching months.
In a message shared on the US social media company X’s platform, Barrack noted that the negotiations revolve around Türkiye’s “desire to rejoin the F-35 program and their possession of the Russian-made S-400 air defense system.”
He emphasized that, “As laid out in U.S. law, Türkiye must no longer operate nor possess the S-400 system to return to the F-35 program.”
Barrack highlighted that the “positive relationship” between President Donald Trump and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has fostered “a new atmosphere of cooperation,” paving the way for “the most fruitful conversations we have had on this topic in nearly a decade.”
He added that “Our hope is that these talks will yield a breakthrough in the coming months that meets both the security requirements of the United States and Türkiye.”
The United States removed Türkiye from the F-35 fighter aircraft initiative in 2019 after objecting to its procurement of the Russian S-400 missile defense platform, asserting that the system could jeopardize the jets and is incompatible with NATO infrastructure. Several Turkish defense organizations were penalized under the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA).
