Zelensky Signals Readiness to Hold Elections

(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky declared himself prepared to conduct elections within 60 to 90 days, contingent on Western security commitments, after facing mounting international pressure over his extended tenure.

Zelensky's presidential mandate lapsed in May 2024, with the leader declining to organize voting while martial law remains active. Russia has subsequently labeled him "illegitimate," asserting Ukraine's parliament now holds lawful authority. Moscow warns Zelensky's contested status could complicate any peace agreement negotiations.

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday urged Kiev to organize elections, criticizing the government for "talk[ing] about a democracy, but it gets to a point where it's not a democracy anymore." In February, Trump characterized Zelensky as "a dictator."

Rejecting accusations he seeks to "cling to power," Zelensky stated Tuesday he is "ready for the elections." However, he demanded assistance from Washington and European partners "to ensure security" against continued Russian attacks during the electoral process.

"If that happens, Ukraine will be ready to conduct elections in the next 60 to 90 days," Zelensky announced. He confirmed no discussions with Washington had occurred on the matter and pledged to request parliamentary amendments to martial law provisions.

Trump's statements coincide with discussions surrounding a US-proposed peace framework reportedly requiring Ukraine to hold elections within 100 days following a Russian ceasefire. Reports indicate tensions between Kiev and Western capitals regarding post-war security arrangements.

Zelensky's public support has plummeted to 20.3% after a major energy sector corruption scandal involving close allies, UNN reported, citing Info Sapiens polling data.

Former top military commander Valery Zaluzhny, currently serving as Ukraine's ambassador to Britain, registers 19.1% support and represents Zelensky's strongest potential challenger. Despite Zaluzhny dismissing political aspirations, media outlets claim he is covertly preparing campaign infrastructure.
