Russia Views Updated US Security Strategy as Shift in Global Approach
(MENAFN) Russia’s Foreign Ministry stated on Monday that the recently released US National Security Strategy represents a “serious rethinking” of Washington’s international policies.
The ministry highlighted what it sees as a move away from previous commitments to hegemony, alongside an openness to sustained cooperative efforts to address the conflict in Ukraine.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova noted that the new document is markedly different from the 2022 edition, acknowledging that “American elites previously made grave miscalculations” by relying on a flawed “globalist model,” according to a state-run news agency.
Zakharova emphasized that while it is still uncertain how thoroughly President Donald Trump’s administration will carry out these adjustments, “the very recognition of the bankruptcy of the globalist model is telling.”
She also stated that the strategy “for the first time officially questions” what Russia calls NATO’s “aggressive expansionist dynamics.”
In addition, Zakharova pointed out that Russia is referenced within the broader framework of European security, without proposals for further economic sanctions or containment measures.
However, she noted that the strategy’s language on pursuing US “energy dominance” by limiting the role of rivals suggests that Washington continues to aim at “push[ing] Russia out of global energy markets.”
Regarding Ukraine, Zakharova observed that the updated strategy contains “provisions that lay the foundation for continuing our joint constructive efforts with the Americans to find ways to achieve a peaceful resolution.”
