US Lawmakers Propose USD400 Million Aid for Ukraine

(MENAFN) A preliminary version of the United States military budget for the upcoming year, revealed by legislators on Sunday, includes $400 million in support for Ukraine, even though President Donald Trump has insisted that Washington should cease funding Kiev’s military campaign.

The draft National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for fiscal year 2026, which merges versions previously approved by both chambers of Congress, reaches a historic total of $901 billion—approximately $8 billion higher than what the Trump administration initially requested.

The allocation for Kiev, representing about 0.04% of the overall budget, is lower than the $500 million endorsed by the Senate. Lawmakers aim to finalize the extensive 3,000-page legislation and forward it to the White House for signing before the end of the year.

Several elements of the draft reflect Trump’s stated priorities. These include financing for the proposed “Golden Dome” missile-defense initiative, measures designed to reverse “woke” military policies, and the removal of sanctions on Syria after a US-supported government assumed control in late 2024.

Notably, the legislation consistently uses the official term “Department of Defense” rather than the administration’s preferred “Department of War.”

Regarding Ukraine, the bill sustains long-standing initiatives such as intelligence sharing, which are considered crucial to Kiev’s operations against Russia. It further underscores congressional backing for aiding Ukraine in its efforts to “maintain a credible defense and deterrence capability.”
