Russian Military Transport Plane Crashes During Test Flight
(MENAFN) A Russian military transport plane has gone down while conducting a test flight following recent servicing, according to the Defense Ministry.
The An-22 Antey aircraft crashed on Tuesday in a remote part of the Ivanovo Region, approximately 360km (220 miles) from Moscow, the ministry stated.
A search and rescue team has been deployed to the scene to assess the condition of the crew.
The Defense Ministry added that a commission from the Russian Air Force will also travel to the site to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash.
A news agency cited sources indicating that the accident took place near the Uvodskoye Reservoir, with fragments of the aircraft recovered from the water.
An anonymous source informed the agency that "the incident had claimed the lives of all seven crew members."
The An-22 Antey is recognized as the world’s largest turboprop aircraft, originally developed in 1965 in the Soviet Union.
Capable of carrying a maximum payload of around 60 tons, it has established 41 world aviation records.
The aircraft can transport up to 290 soldiers or 29 crew members alongside cargo over extended distances.
