Gemma Nisbet is a writer and academic living and working on Whadjuk Noongar Boodja. She is a Lecturer in Professional Writing and Editing at Curtin University and an Adjunct Research Fellow in the University of Western Australia's School of Humanities.

Gemma holds a PhD in Creative Writing from the UWA and, as a researcher, is engaged in practice-led explorations of relationships between humans and the more-than-human (especially objects and animals), life writing ethics, illness narratives, memory studies, queer theory and the personal essay.

She has professional background in journalism, having worked as a travel journalist, literary critic and feature writer for The West Australian. Her creative, critical and scholarly work has also appeared in publications including Westerly, TEXT, Australian Book Review, Life Writing, AXON and Meniscus.

Her first book, The Things We Live With: Essays on Uncertainty, was published by Upswell in October 2023, and was shortlisted for the 2024 WA Premier's Prize for an Emerging Writer.
