Authorities Advise Citizens To Seek Psychological Assistance Following Recent Crisis
Dr. Miyuru Chandradasa, a specialist in child and adolescent psychiatry at the Ragama Teaching Hospital, noted that emotional strain is a natural reaction after large-scale destructive events, as such incidents can significantly disrupt psychological stability.
He emphasised the importance of acknowledging early signs of distress and taking steps to manage them effectively. Dr. Chandradasa also encouraged individuals who are experiencing severe emotional difficulty to obtain treatment from the closest state-run medical facility.
Addressing the impact on young people, he explained that children who feel unsettled should be gently guided back into familiar routines. Activities such as playtime and spending time with peers can help restore a sense of normalcy.
According to him, emotional pressure may manifest in various ways, including irritability, trouble sleeping, reduced appetite, and exhaustion.
Dr. Chandradasa further recalled that the country has faced numerous crises over the years, yet collective strength and determination have consistently helped communities rebuild.
He added that the recent flooding and Cyclone Ditwah triggered a significant humanitarian setback, leaving many residents overwhelmed. Feelings of deep sorrow, numbness, disbelief, shock, and a loss of motivation are to be expected, he said.
Offering reassurance, Dr. Chandradasa reminded the public that the nation stands in solidarity with those affected. He urged individuals not to abandon their aspirations despite the hardships they face, saying that even the loss of property or loved ones should not extinguish hope.
