Meloni, Zelenskyy Hold Phone Talks

(MENAFN) Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni held a telephone discussion Sunday with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, affirming that Italy will send urgent assistance to Ukraine to reinforce its strained energy network.

This assurance arrived just before Zelenskyy’s upcoming visits to London, Brussels, and Rome, where he is expected to meet European leaders to advance conversations regarding the peace initiative with Russia, according to a statement from her office.

Meloni conveyed her country’s solidarity with Ukraine in light of the most recent Russian strikes, the announcement noted.

In the weeks ahead, Italian firms are set to provide generators to Ukraine "to support energy infrastructure and the population," the statement added.

Meloni further voiced her approval of ongoing diplomatic endeavors and the United States’ determination to establish a path toward a "just and lasting peace."

Ukraine’s willingness to engage in talks sincerely remains "instrumental to this process," the statement emphasized, while also expressing optimism that Moscow would show "similar openness."

Zelenskyy wrote on the US social media company X that he had "a very substantive conversation" with Meloni, thanking her for her attention to diplomatic efforts and support for the country’s power systems.

"There is still work to be done together to ensure that Russia genuinely commits to ending the war," he said. "Italy clearly supports the need for real security and for preventing any renewed outbreaks of war."
