ADB Approves US$3 Million Emergency Grant For Sri Lanka Relief

(MENAFN- Colombo Gazette) The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has authorized a US$3 million disaster relief grant to support Sri Lanka's ongoing recovery operations following the devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwah. Thailand and Vietnam, also affected by extreme weather, will each receive US$2 million in emergency assistance.

ADB President Masato Kanda announced the grants after receiving requests for support from the affected countries' governments.

“I am deeply saddened by the suffering caused by these devastating floods,” President Kanda said.“The governments and people of Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam can be assured that ADB will provide aid to save lives and help rebuild communities. We are committed to working quickly and collaboratively to deliver shelter, relief, and hope to those impacted.”

The funding will be drawn from the Asia Pacific Disaster Response Fund (APDRF), which allows for rapid, life-saving support to developing member nations in the immediate aftermath of disasters caused by natural hazards.

Flooding across Sri Lanka and several Southeast Asian countries has led to significant loss of life and extensive damage to homes, infrastructure, and public services.

Founded in 1966, ADB is a multilateral development bank owned by 69 members, including 50 from the Asia-Pacific region. The bank focuses on inclusive, sustainable, and resilient growth, leveraging innovative financial tools and strategic partnerships to enhance infrastructure, improve livelihoods, and address regional challenges.
