Trump refuses to exclude possibility to send US troops to Venezuela

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump said Monday that he would not exclude the possibility of sending American troops to Venezuela, while noting he will “probably” speak with President Nicolas Maduro.

Pressed at the White House on whether he would rule out deploying US forces on Venezuelan soil, Trump responded: “I don't rule out that. I don't rule out anything.”

“We just have to take care of Venezuela. They dumped hundreds of thousands of people into our country from prisons,” he said, claiming that although the border is now tightly controlled, “we had millions of people pouring through a year ago.”

Trump added that he is open to direct talks with Maduro as regional tensions spike, with the US carrying out a series of strikes on vessels it says are tied to drug trafficking.

Asked if he would commit to speaking with Maduro before authorizing more strikes, Trump said he “probably would talk to him.”

His comments came after Washington designated the Venezuela-based Cartel de los Soles as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO), expanding the authority of US agencies to target groups linked to Maduro, whom Trump accuses of leading the network.

Trump further indicated he would consider similar actions in nearby countries, saying he is open to authorizing strikes in Mexico and Colombia to curb drug trafficking.

“Would I launch strikes in Mexico to stop drugs? It's okay with me, whatever we have to do to stop drugs,” he said. “Colombia has cocaine factories where they make cocaine. Would I knock out those factories? I would be proud to do it…because we're going to save millions of lives.”
