Norway Urges Swift Advancement in Gaza Ceasefire Plan

(MENAFN) Norway on Tuesday expressed strong approval for the UN Security Council’s resolution supporting a ceasefire and endorsing a comprehensive 20-point roadmap for peace in Gaza, while urging rapid movement into the initiative’s subsequent phase.

Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide described the council’s endorsement as a “welcome” step forward, emphasizing that it is crucial to maintain momentum. Posting on the US social media platform X, he underscored that it is “essential now to move into phase two of the plan."

Eide further noted that Norway remains committed to striving for “a unified Palestinian state, governed by Palestinians."

On Monday, the UN Security Council approved a resolution drafted by the United States that establishes a transitional Board of Peace (BoP) and authorizes International Stabilization Forces (ISF) to manage administrative, reconstruction, and security responsibilities within the Gaza Strip.

The measure was adopted with 13 votes in favor, while Russia and China opted to abstain.

The authorization for both the ISF and the Board of Peace extends until Dec. 31, 2027.

Since October 2023, almost 69,500 Palestinians — the majority being women and children — have lost their lives, and over 170,700 have been injured amid Israel’s ongoing war, which has left vast areas of the enclave in ruins.
