Landslide in central Java kills eleven people, dozens still missing

(MENAFN) The number of fatalities from the landslide that struck Indonesia’s Central Java province has climbed to 11, while 12 people are still unaccounted for as rescue teams maintained their efforts on Sunday, according to officials.

M. Abdullah, the head of the regional search and rescue unit in the area where the disaster occurred, said that teams are still working to locate the remaining missing individuals after recovering 11 bodies.

"Hopefully, all 12 victims who are still buried can be found," he said, according to reports.
He noted that Sunday’s operation involved a large deployment of manpower and machinery.

"We have deployed 21 excavators, 17 compressor support tools, nine search dogs, and more than 600 personnel," Abdullah said.

Earlier on Friday, the national disaster agency reported that 20 people had initially been declared missing and three had been confirmed dead following Thursday’s landslide in Cilacap.
