Trump Considers Saudi Arabia Proposal to Purchase F-35 Fighter Jets
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump said Friday he is considering a request from Saudi Arabia to acquire F-35 stealth fighters, just days before Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman arrives at the White House on Nov. 18.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said Riyadh had shown significant interest in the advanced aircraft manufactured by Lockheed Martin. “They wanna buy a lot of jets,” he said. “They’ve asked me to look at it. They want to buy a lot of ‘35’ but they want to buy actually more than that fighter jets.”
His comments followed a report from media, which, citing an administration official, said Trump and the crown prince are expected to finalize an agreement during the visit that would clear the way for Saudi Arabia to purchase the F-35.
According to the official, who spoke anonymously, the two sides also plan to sign several economic and defense accords, including a liquefied natural gas deal.
Trump added that the talks would broaden into wider diplomatic issues. “The Abraham Accords will be a part,” he said. “We’re going to be discussing, I hope, that Saudi Arabia will be going into the Abraham Accords fairly shortly.”
